Let’s talk about upsetting clothing collections

Outrageous fashion lines list! Melania Trump is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to her outfit choices. She faced criticism for the sky-high stilettos she wore to Texas following Hurricane Harvey, she was called out for gardening in Balmain, and, most notably, she sparked outrage this summer when she wore a Zara jacket with the words “I Really Don’t Care Do U?” printed across the back. In what many considered a very calculated move, the first lady wore the jacket while on her way to visit a detention center in Texas that was housing immigrant children who were separated from their parents at the Mexican border.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall/Winter 1993 Collection, “Chic Rabbis” was what Jean Paul Gaultier labeled his Fall/Winter 1993 show because it was inspired by a trip to NYC where he encountered a group of rabbis leaving the New York Public Library. The designer said he loved the elegance of their dress with their hats and huge coats flapping in the wind but the collection came under fire for being culturally insensitive with specific complaints from Hasidic groups concerning female models in the show wearing traditionally masculine hairstyles and clothes.

Curvy Models Speak Out About Victoria’s Secret Lack of Size Diversity, Despite the fact that the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Runway was the most diverse VS model cast ever in terms of race, when it came to size, it was anything but. Models like Ashley Graham took to social media to publicly denounce the choice, but the brand has yet to even acknowledge the criticism.

You won’t remember this outfit from the VS 2012 runway because it was cut before the TV broadcast aired due to the stir it caused. Cultural appropriation much? As usual, it was the Native American tradition that was misused, this time by the fashion world. Controversially, Karlie Kloss, a white woman, walked the runway in a what appeared to be a knock-off of a traditional Native American headdress and tribal-inspired lingerie. Apparently, no one at the brand saw the potential problem entailed in the appropriation of traditional dress, in ignorance as to its meaning and origins. Cultural appropriation is a buzz phrase at the moment, and the use of Native American tradition in a non-traditional sense has been a hot topic throughout the United States, from sports to, of course, fashion in recent years. Perhaps picking up on this trend, or perhaps ignorantly participating in it, Victoria’s Secret used their platform to showcase some pretty overt cultural appropriation. The brand and model later apologized for the awkward fashion mishap.
