Today, deforestation takes place in the form of logging, mining, farming and rampant development. If current rates continue, rainforests will disappear altogether within a century. The largest rainforests in the world come in two forms: tropical and temperate. Tropical rainforests are located near the equator, between the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5° north and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5° south of the equator. They are evergreen, have a warm and wet climate and receive consistent rainfall – at least 2,000mm annually. Tropical rainforests once covered 14% of the Earth’s land surface; today, it is only 6%. Despite this, about 80% of the world’s documented species can be found in tropical rainforests.

El Yunque National Forest is a tropical rainforest in northeastern Puerto Rico. From El Portal Visitor Center, a walkway winds through the surrounding treetops. Trails run to La Mina waterfall and Mount Britton, then up to the high-altitude dwarf forest. In the south are ancient petroglyphs, made by the area’s indigenous Taíno people. The forest comes alive with the nightly calls of coquí tree frogs. Read more information at El Yunque rain forest exploration blog. The 4 large peaks (El Yunque, El Toro, East Peak and El Cacique) survived the erosion of millions of years and 100 Billions gallons of water per year because they are crystalized minerals from ancient volcanos – very hard materials. The rest of the ground just melts in the rain. But then the millions of roots hold the ground firmly. And most cities and beaches nearby are the result of millions of years of erosion from this center of endless rainfall from the African Trade-Winds (Vientos Alisios).
