Several studies suggest that mindfulness meditation can benefit those who struggle with stress, anxiety and depression issues. A literature review conducted in 2014 assessed 47 mindfulness meditation trials that involved around 3,515 participants. The review concluded that meditation is a useful tool that helps relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. And not only do meditators feel less stressed, their levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol decrease measurably. Chogyal Rinpoche, a spiritual leader and meditation expert, explains how meditation gradually calms the mind and prevents strong emotions from erupting uncontrollably. So rather than allowing themselves to be overcome by depression and stress, meditators learn to calm their minds and achieve balance.
It is a person-centered therapy based on the belief that people already possess the answers they need to solve their problems. The FOT therapy that I use is grounded in what is called focusing theory, which focuses on the on the internal experience. A central concept of Focusing, an FOT concept, is the felt sense. Connecting with the felt sense during FOT can be an important guide to your emotions, thoughts, and feelings. As a somatic therapist in Melbourne, I will help you to develop awareness of your body’s felt sense. This is done by directing attention towards an internal landscape that dips below the conscious mind.
Anxiety – it’s a natural part of life, and something we’ve all experienced. In small doses, it is normal, and it even serves a purpose. How? Anxiety is the body’s autonomic nervous system’s way to attempt to protect you from danger. But when the anxiety is irrational, prolonged, it can become debilitating. I’m sure you’ve tried thinking your way out of it, walks, breathing exercises t it’s just not working… All psychologists, therapists, counsellors, psychotherapists know…heck, even you know, that thinking your way out of anxiety doesn’t always work. Yet, time and again I’ve seen counsellors, psychologists try to use logic, and outdated methods in working with anxiety. Such as “it’s an irrational belief” or “just try and think about something else.” That doesn’t work! How about breathing? Yes, it’s true, slow diaphragmatic breathing does activate the parasympathetic nervous system. See additional details at https://ronnieadamowicz.com/.
